Theat Management - Awake or Asleep?

This should probably have some important-sounding title like "Situational Awareness" and then go through the often-cited color code of conditions (usually the list from firearms legend Jeff Cooper - white, yellow, orange, red). Instead, I'll focus on only two conditions. Easy to remember and it's a yes or no question.
Presumably, one who is awake is alert and aware of his or her surroundings. That's not really true. Take a few moments to notice how others move through life. If they are walking along, head lowered, perhaps playing with a cell phone, are they really awake? I think they are asleep. They do not appear to have any direct awareness of what is happening around them. Lost in thought. Lost in non-thought. If something were to happen around one of these people, he or she would first have to wake up into the actual world to figure out what was happening. This can result in unfortunate consequences if the event can cause direct harm. All of us let this happen, but it is in your best interest to minimize it whenever and however possible. Actually being in bed at night asleep is different, that's what dogs and alarms are for. This is being awake when you are supposed to be awake.
In a modern society, it is easy to function while asleep - there are not supposed to be predators behind every tree. But, what if there were? You'd tend to stay awake. This isn't paranoia, it's common sense. A "predator" can be a car darting out of an alley or a broken curb where a fall into traffic would be inconvenient at best. When awake, these are easy threats to avoid. If asleep, they become difficult to manage.
First, stay awake.
