Threat Management - Appearance

What you look like to others may be more important than you think. The best defense against a threat is to not be faced with that threat in the first place. When you head out into the world, are you dressed like you belong in preschool? One's "uniform" says a lot to others. Think of a State Trooper, for example. There's an image of what that person is and it all comes from his or her uniform. Please make sure that your own "uniform" is not telling others that you are ill-prepared for life.
If you've decided to streak your hair with orange and green dye, just make sure you have the confidence to carry off that appearance. If not, you'll look like the people who show off their tattoos because they think that ink makes them look like a rebel or makes them look tough. Actually, it makes them look like insecure children who are not comfortable with their tattoos at all.
I was reading a thread in a forum where the people like wearing fedora hats. They were discussing all the stupid comments they have heard from others and how to best ignore those comments. This was surprising to me. I wear a fedora on occasion but usually wear very fancy cowboy hats. Nobody makes any stupid comments to me. Why? Because nobody is going to make a stupid comment to me about anything. I'll not tolerate it, others can feel that coming from me, so one less thing to deal with.
You always have the choice to appear to others as whatever you wish, but if you're headed to a shopping mall wearing pajamas, I hope you are mean and ugly looking otherwise - if not, you're going to look like a dolt who can't get dressed. Would I choose to attack the guy wearing heavy boots and a leather jacket or the guy wearing pajamas? Who would probably be easier to rob? Perhaps the guy in pajamas is a Ninja master but it wouldn't appear that way. If you look like you know what you are doing, if you carry yourself confidently, aware of your surroundings, threats will choose another target. Don't look like a weak target. Make sure you look like an even bigger threat.
