Threat Management - Gun Safety

Whether you already have a gun or you decide to get one, at some point you will read lists of rules about safe handling of guns, what to remember, how to do it, ways to lock, store or keep guns. This information that you run into is well-meaning and will presumably keep you safe from your gun. None of that is in here since I honestly can't remember any of those rules and I don't need to be sure that my gun won't hurt me.

My gun isn't going to do anything at all. It is a machine. A person must physically do something to it or the gun is just going to sit there being a gun. The physically do something part is pull the trigger. If that doesn't happen, given a modern gun in good condition, there will be no "bang" sound. Many guns have no safety at all so I'm not even bothering to mention it. My gun doesn't have one. A gun can be in two states or conditions - it's either loaded with ammunition  or it is empty. If you have checked that the gun has no ammunition in it, then the gun cannot be used for anything other than a hammer or club. If the gun is loaded and you pull the trigger, you have caused the gun to fire, which blows a hole in whatever is in front of the barrel. It doesn't matter where the gun is pointed, if the trigger is not pulled, nothing happens.

While most people don't want guns pointed at them for obvious reasons, you do what you need to do regarding weapon movement, since you're the one who can pull the trigger. Loaded - you are completely responsible. Empty - it's a brick.

Notes: make sure a few times that it's empty. Then check again. And, children are much smarter than adults. Any gun in any condition with any ammunition accessible anywhere and a child will figure out how to load and fire the gun. Children are fascinated with guns.
