A Local "Drug Raid"

I heard something on the radio about a local drug raid from February, where the end result was no drugs found and the family's little pet dog was shot by the police. Generally, I have no problem either way with law enforcement officers, but this time it is just a bit much. This topic was being discussed on a forum and rather than summarize, I will just copy what I wrote and drop it in here. Of course, you may draw your own conclusions.

Here's the actual film of the raid: http://blog.simplejustice.us/2010/05/05/picture-perfect.aspx

Here's some comments from me:

A - fixed it for you. I am sitting in Columbia, MO right now. That means if the wind blows the wrong way, I will have a dozen SWAT guys breaking down the door of my pickup and shooting my pet monkey.

As to that particular incident, the chief of police this morning said he needed to "investigate further [and some other crap]" Guess what? There were no drugs there at all. There was pot residue in an old pipe, somebody on the SWAT team probably chopped holes in the walls to find the relic from the 1960s.
This is the same new chief who told his officers to stop patrolling and write more traffic tickets (average was about 3 a day, chief now wants 9 per officer, no excuses why not).
CPD will shoot dogs for any reason, all reasons, no reasons. About 15 years ago, during yet another wonderful drug raid, a guy I know shot a dog twice because it lunged at him. The dog was on a log chain at the time. Duh.
While CPD stays busy protecting the citizens of Columbia, why is it that there's enough meth produced outside the downtown area to fill a freight train every day? Why? Because, guess what? Raiding those guys IS dangerous. We wouldn't want our CPD SWAT guys with MP5s and M4s to actually confront some real bad guys.

Meanwhile, Columbia is in Boone County, just west is Howard County and Cooper County. These three county sheriffs have some of the very best guys I have ever worked with. Last time I was checking out some supposed meth lab (it was not), here comes the dog. Pretty big dog. The guy I was with had his riot gun pointed at the dog but did not move. I gave the dog a milk bone - and then couldn't get rid of the mutt for the next hour. Exactly how tough is this? I am sure not the dog whisperer and I have shot a ton of dogs - just after it's all teeth and they are coming at light speed.

I have Columbia cop stories it would take years to tell. Odd that I can't think of any local sheriff stories, or highway patrol stories - and I don't even live in Columbia.

Oh, I am not law enforcement. Thank you, Lord, for small favors....

Update 5-11-2010: Local radio reports that the police chief has some new rules about drug raids. Seems somebody of Captain rank or above has to approve them and the SWAT commanders can no longer approve their own drug raids. Also the chief says that there will be other "new rules" regarding what is done when children are present during a drug raid. Radio said that it was a pit bull that was shot - not how I heard it, but of course it's always a pit bull, even when it's 12 pounds.
Spoke with a lady this morning whose son went to high school with the guy who got raided. Word is that the guy smoked pot once in a while. Wow. There's a real dangerous person. Ever notice how when a bunch of people get together and drink booze, there's a fight, but if they smoke pot, they sit around and discuss peace and love and snacks? Meanwhile, still plenty of meth around here.
